Listening can be a problem. It can be a problem for children, as they’re usually too busy doing something to stop and listen, and adults, as they’re usually too prideful to consider what’s being said. But if we would be good Christians, then we must be people who are willing to listen: listen to God, listen to the Word, listen to Christian counsel. The Bible, for example, is replete with this idea. Proverbs 1:8 says, “Hear…your father’s instruction.”
Listening implies an openness to different media. We all become comfortable with a particular way of learning or listening, but this can create a deafness in our minds that compromises our growth. When Elijah was in a difficult place, God spoke to Elijah through 3 different media, but Elijah was impacted finally through a low whisper.
Perhaps we should try more whispering, more listening.
