What Now? What to Expect After Becoming a Christian

I’m disturbed by the teaching and reasoning of many Christians in our Western culture. They seem to be oblivious to the reality of the Christian life. As a result, the majority of what the Bible teaches is almost entirely lost, because they simply don’t think it applies to them. On that cue, I’d like to share a short list of things that we can expect–according to the Bible!–after becoming a Christ follower. (Please note: some of these are going to be experienced by each and every Christian without discrimination, but others won’t be. Also, this list if far from exhaustive. Feel free to suggest more.)

If you’ve become a Christian, you can expect:

Love, joy, peace, patience et al (Galatians 5:22-23)

Power in the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 1:7)

Persecution (John 15:33)

God’s promises (2 Corinthians 1:20)

Disappointment (Acts 13:13 with 15:37-38)

Hope (Romans 8:23-25)

Spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-18)

Racial, gender equality (Galatians 3:26-29)

Brotherhood (Matthew 19:28-30; Romans 12:10)

Church disagreement (Philippians 4:1-2)

Marital difficulties (1 Corinthians 7)

Struggle with sin (Romans 6-8)

Rest (Matthew 11:28)

Comfort (1 Peter 5:7)

I haven’t written this post in order to be controversial or troublesome. I simply want everyone to acknowledge the truth: becoming a Christians doesn’t necessary erase the difficulties that we will face in this world. But it does promise us the confidence and company of the King.
